Once again, we are packing our bags and headed off into the world. Australia is our destination this time. This will be the last of the 7 continents for us to visit.
As everyone has seen recently on the news, there have been devastating flooding in the Queensland area of north-eastern Australia over the past several weeks - most recently effecting Brisbane earlier last week. This news obviously had us concerned as we are scheduled for a couple of stops in that region. Fortunately, the most recent weather reports are improved with the worst of the flooding seemingly behind them. While there is significant damage throughout the area, the airports, roads, and train we are scheduled to be using are all open and running. We have opted not to rearrange any of our itinerary as of now - although that may change once we are there if the conditions are different.
We are doing a whirlwind itinerary throughout the country although staying mostly in the southeastern part of the country for the most part. We are not heading out to the western outback or up to the Great Barrier Reef in the north.
We fly into Brisbane and then travel about an hour south to place called Lamington National Park - a rainforest area with abundant bird and animal life. We spend a few days there, then head back north of Brisbane to Fraser Island. There we hope to see some wild dingoes in addition to other wildlife and scenery. From there, we head to Sydney for a few days in and around the city. Then, we travel further south-west to Kangaroo Island off the coast from Adelaide. Finally, we finish in Melbourne arriving on the day of the Australian Open Men's Final (no - we do not have tickets).
See map below for reference - before planning this trip, we embarrassingly knew very little of Australian geography.
There should be pretty reliable internet throughout most of the trip, so we will do our best to keep the blog up to date for those who want to follow along. We will post pictures as we can as well.
