Days 1-3: June 22-24, 2011
Why are the trips we plan always so far away?!?! We drove to JFK and then took the very long flight to Johannesburg, South Africa. We spent the day in the hotel in Johannesburg before meeting the rest of our group and our guide, Ian, for dinner. In the morning, we boarded a plane for the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo. Upon arrival, we passed through customs where at least five people had to check and stamp our passports and then drove to the east to Mantadia National Park. After dinner at the Vakona Forsest Lodge, we retired to our cabin. It took three days of travel to reach our first destination.
Interesting fact: Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island. As a comparison, Great Britain is the 11th largest island.
Special for Ruth and Rich: another country where rice is considered a breakfast food!
