Today we spent the day at Ivoloina Zoological Park, where a NGO called Madagascar Fauna Association, does work to save endemic species. Besides education for the local school children, they are active in research and sustainable agriculture. They work to breed several rare species of lemurs, including the Greater Bamboo Lemur, which is one of the top ten most endangered primates. Other lemur species there include the black and white ruffed lemur, the crowned lemur and the blue eyed black lemur. Sadly, some of these species can only be seen in zoo-like settings as the numbers in the wild are rapidly dwindling. They also have started some frog conservation and research. After a guided tour of the zoo, then a picnic lunch, we enjoyed a hike around the area with some great views.
After returning to the Hotel Sharon, which has awful water pressure, we walked to dinner at a local restaurant, which featured live music. The music was an odd mix of Malagasy songs, French songs, and twenty year old American songs. However, this was less odd than the Christmas music we listened to during dinner the night before.
