This morning we are at the place where two large tributaries, the Maranon and Ucayali Rivers, meet to form the Amazon River. We spotted a few more dolphins and some other bird species before stopping in a local village called Puerto Miguel. We were greeted with some local music, interacted with the children in their schoolhouse, saw some dancing, and toured the village. After lunch on the Aqua, we traveled to the city of Nauta and traveled along a road through the jungle towards Iquitos. We stopped at a manatee rescue center, which is working to reintroduce these endangered “sea cows” back into the Amazon. We were able to touch and interact with four baby manatees. Finally, we boarded our flight back to Lima and spent the night at an airport hotel.
Interesting Fact: The freshwater manatee is highly endangered with as few as 90 individuals left in the wild. This species is smaller than the marine (saltwater) varieties but can still grow to be 6 feet long and 500 pounds.
